AS Module M1: Teaching Mechanics for the First Time

The workshop is suitable for all A level specifications and is designed to provide teachers with the personal competences, knowledge and skills to teach and examine M1 Mechanics at A- level. It will focus on developing subject knowledge in addition to providing some practical guidance and learning approaches for teaching the subject.

Aims of the course are to:

  • Provide those teachers new to the subject an overview of the range of topics in Mechanics
  • Give a working knowledge of the notation and terminology of the models used in Mechanics
  • Provide opportunities for hands-on experience of solving problems in Mechanics
  • Experience teaching approaches that actively engage students in their learning

Who should attend?
Teachers in schools and colleges who will be teaching an M1 module for the first time in the near future, those who are fairly new to teaching the subject and for those who might need to update their subject knowledge.

  • A selection of problems illustrating topics in M1 Mechanics
  • An overview of the assumptions and simplifications that form an essential part of a Mechanics course

  • Introducing the forces that feature in a first course in mechanics
  • The concept of equilibrium in Mechanics
  • Solving problems in which the forces are in equilibrium
  • Forces and Dynamics
  • Introducing Newton’s laws of motion
  • Solving problems in dynamics using Newton’s second law

  • Graphical and algebraic methods of solving problems on the motion of objects
  • The suvat approach to problem solving
  • An introduction to momentum, collisions and impulse
  

Professor John

John is an experienced teacher, author and examiner. He was Professor of Mathematics Education at a university in the south of England for over 20 years. He now teaches A-level Mathematics as the Mathematics Professor in Residence at an independent school and works with groups of able and talented students from Key Stage 3 and 4 in the school, providing an enrichment programme.


Within his freelance role, John runs one-day workshops for able and talented primary and secondary students in mathematics. He has many years’ experience delivering well-received professional development courses for teachers both at a national and an international level. John has published widely, including the Do Brilliantly at Revision guides for AS and A2 Mathematics.
