This course will examine the delicate issues that surround the effective teaching of Sex & Relationship Education to pupils with Special Educational Needs. The tutor will provide you with a wealth of real world, practical solutions to help you tackle this important topic successfully and sensitively. This training is intended as a broad introduction. However, by the end of the day participants should feel clear about government guidance and good practice in SRE, more confident about their own role in SRE and better informed about appropriate resources. The workshop will actively involve participants in individual, small group and plenary exercises, reflection and discussion.
Aims of the course are to:
* briefly clarify legislation and guidance on sexual health and relationships education and their implications for policy and practice in schools
* explore the sexual health and relationships education needs of the young people they work with and how those needs might best be met
* consider some of the key issues regarding sexual health and relationships education for young people with special needs, including parental concerns, balance between protection and entitlement, consent and appropriate behaviour.
