School Radio: How it Works and Why

Course code:
MED008
Radio in schools is gaining popularity, and there are plenty of schools buying equipment…but so often the 'what's next' is an after thought. So this course looks at training issues. We look at target audiences, playlists, running orders, interview techniques and basic programme presentation from all-speech to music based. There will be advice on what equipment to buy and, crucially, what not to buy. We will look at involving the community with broadcasts and how to run a 24/7 FM radio station from school as well as an internal service. That means we will also consider some basic legal issues, licences etc. Of course the most important point of all – why set up a radio station in the first place?
