The course aims to develop delegates' understanding of the factors that make some children, often boys, reluctant to read, and to help them develop strategies to tackle the problem.

These will include specific techniques in teaching reading, including explaining and dealing with the irregularities in English spelling, and ways of giving each pupil a sense of satisfaction in reading, including matching texts to pupils' interests, and developing the use of non-fiction material, both in private reading and in lessons.
