How can we most effectively support learners of English as an additional language in acquiring full English fluency in and through the primary curriculum? This is the challenge faced not only by EAL specialists, but by all teachers working with pupils learning English as an Additional Language.
This course outlines the distinctive need of beginner and advanced EAL learners in primary schools, and highlights some of the ways in which linguistic and cultural diversity may impact on learning. It provides opportunity for participants to examine a number of case studies and use the EAL common assessment scale, 'A Language in Common', to set targets for improvement. By focusing on a specific lesson, the course will provide practical examples of ways in which teaching and learning could be made more inclusive.
Through a balance of interactive presentation and collaborative group discussion participants will be encouraged to reflect on ways in which a range of strategies might be used to enhance provision for pupils learning EAL within the Primary Classroom.
